How You Can Help
At Home
- Be an advocate for change – write a letter to your elected official or a local newspaper. Let them know where you stand on environmental issues.
- Replace light bulbs – Energy Star light bulbs last many times longer and use up to 75% less energy than normal light bulbs.
- Buy locally – support local communities by purchasing your goods locally and cut down on transportation emissions.
- Buy items in bulk – packaging accounts for almost a third of all the garbage in the United States. Avoid single serving items and do your part to cut down on waste.
- Use filtered tap water – it takes more than 1.5 billion barrels of oil to meet American demands for plastic bottled water. Switch to filtered tap water in a reusable bottle.
At Work
- Go paperless – tired of searching through piles of paper? Send and save documents electronically.
- Reuse and recycle – look at items your company uses on a daily basis and find ways to recycle or reuse common items.
- Print double-sided – The average U.S. worker goes through 10,000 sheets of copy paper a year. Reduce your usage by printing double-sided.
- Bring your own dishware – instead of using disposable cups, silverware and plates bring your own mug and dishware.
- Meet virtually – sometimes an in-person meeting is necessary but when it isn’t, now there are many easy and inexpensive ways to conference online.
